2010 makes a difference for the mobile industry! Through the last years mobile was broadly just seen at the extended online. Most mobile operations were developed online-centric and adoption to the mobile failed at the user level.
But this has changed, as the smartest players now put mobile first. That´s what Eric Schmidt has claimed in his MWC2010 keynote. From now on their best developers want to work on mobile centric projects and any rollout of a new google service will be launched on the mobile platform in first phase. The keynote caused a lot of discussion within the TelCo community and I think, it´s necessary to highlight the different aspects. [Eric Schmidt - Google - Keynote at Mobile World Congress 2010]
First, I am amazed by the google momentum, bringing together all the different pieces on their own platform and scaling it from there. I don´t see any other company that can do that. I wished there would be a Nokia, Microsoft or Amazon or any kind of open platform. But watch the keynote video and you might agree, that google is far beyond.
Second, I am worried, because all that beauty happens within one centralized intelligence and belongs to one company. I love cloud services and the ease of use of the google applications. However, this is far beyond any level of power, that one institution should ever have. I don´t blame google for it, as they just do it right. Eric Schmidt´s keynote is the final call to action for any serious player in the telecommunications (and media)
market to rethink strategy.
As well, I am
worried about the limited scope that some market players have. While google thinks in big terms, Microsoft hopefully launches mobile 7 most publishers don´t look at the data side of business but try to launch single paid applications. I wish that the apple platform will help to make these plans successful. However, even if so, the game has changed for the publishers as they now have to rely to the run on a closed platform, that is owned by somebody else.
I
put my hopes on the carriers (fixed line or wireless). Maybe publishers don´t see themselves as tech companies, but Telcos do! Therefore it is great news, that 24 network operators created a wholesale applications community and join forces to make mobile apps available for 3 billion customers. América Móvil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KT, mobilkom austria group, MTN Group, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Orascom Telecom, Softbank Mobile, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor Group, TeliaSonera, SingTel, SK Telecom, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, VimpelCom, Vodafone and Wind want to create an ecosystem for the development and distribution of applications irrespective of device or technology. It will take time till this monster gets going, but once started it has a necessary momentum to bring back the balance of power against a google.
My wish is, that publishers don´t limit their efforts on apple app store. The ease of working with an apple app store can easily turn out into a honey trap and limit the potential dramatically. It´s obviously much more complex to work with an open platform but for the only way to realize the potential of any serious brand.
